Adding an avatar.

The Avatar is the little picture to the left of each post. In the online world it really helps folks recognize you in a sea of words. To set one up you'll need a small enough pic to load or point to...

Resizing a picture:
Option 1: Get your kids to do it. Cool
Option 2: Search/Google/scrounge for a pic that's alread pretty small.
Option 3: Open the digital image you want in any photo editing software. Digital cameras and scanners usually come with one. Once the picture is open
- look in the menu for "Image Size" or "Scale" (usually under Image or Modify).
- Make sure "Constrain proportions" is set/checked.
- Set the largest side to 160 pixels or less.
- If you're happy, choose File-Save As and give it a new name.

You have three options for setting an Avatar.
1. Browse button to upload from you machine (if you just resized it.)
2. Upload from URL - you enter the webaddress of the pic and it will pull a copy for use as your avatar.
3. Link off-site will go to the address you enter for the pic everytime it needs it.

Linking a picture from the web.
1. Find the picture you want out there on the web.
2. Right click and choose "Properties"
3. Select the address with your mouse and hit Ctrl-C to copy (or right-click and Copy)
4. Go back to your post and Paste (Ctrl-V)
5. Select the text of the address and hit the "Img" button. It will put tags around it like this
6. Preview your post and the pic should be showing.

Subscribing.
Found a topic that you'd like to watch for updates? Or maybe you're an expert in a particular category and want to help out when there's a question? On each topic and each category you'll see a link to "subscribe" that section. Subscribe to a topic and you'll get an email when someone posts to it. Subscribe to a forum and you'll get a notice when a new topic is started. (i.e. I have a subscription to the Introductions forum so I can welcome new members)

Subscriptions are also managed in the User Control panel. You can remove a watch/subscription from there or from the forum/thread you're watching. (The link changes from "Subscribe forum" to "Unsubscribe forum" when you click it.)

This feature promotes more chatter and quicker discussions. Email is free so use it liberally!

...and this browse button would be located where? I've looked at my profile, etc, and nothing found. Inquiring minds want to know.

"browse button" is misnamed... You were almost there.

Click through User Control Panel/Profile/Your Avatar to get the dialog for inserting your avatar picture.

So avatar pics can't be uploaded directly? They have to reside on a web page somewhere? I'm not seeing a browse button.

Not sure where the browse button went. I have it enabled for the forum but that option is gone. I'll investigate.
